Amarok, the Music Player

Monday, February 19th, 2007

This is probably the first time I use Amarok with the Xine engine. I love Gstreamer’s architecture, but it isn’t there yet regarding stability and performance. I generally prefer using GNOME applications to do my tasks, but Amarok is so damn usable that it’s really a surprise. It’s a very mature and usable application and I use it daily since my update to Edgy.

Kudos for the Amarok developers!

The Best Cross-Platform Disk Cataloging Application

Monday, February 12th, 2007

I've had a hard time finding a really usable disk cataloging application that runs on Linux. I've only used Where Is It, because it was the best I knew, but unfortunately it's properietary, closed-source and runs only on Windows. Fortunately I've successfully found a very viable and really usable alternative, Hyper's CdCatalog.

This software has an exceptionally usable user interface. Despite how rough some edges of the UI are, it is a pleasure to work with, because the overall UI is very well aligned. I think it is a great example of how it is possible to create a spectacular application with a minimal fuss. Its creator, Péter Deák is a fellow Hungarian developer, which makes my little heart feel even more warmth toward this piece of software. ;-)

Goodbye Tiger!

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Tiger, the beloved cat of my family has passed out last week. His death came very suddenly, no one of us expected it to happen. Tiger has survived quite a lot of things. He has been hit by a car, beaten up pretty badly, and has gotten an ugly virus which almost killed him last year. The odd thing is, we don’t know what happened to him this time. My mother found him lying on the floor. By that time he was already dead. Maybe he ate something ugly. No one knows.

Tiger

Goodbye Tiger! Have a good time in the kitty heaven! We will always remember you!

UC: Site Improvements

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

I've made some improvements on the UC site a few days ago and I think it's a lot easier to navigate it as a result of these improvements. I've also put up some shameless advertising. I don't like to disturb users with ads, but currently it's the only way to make some money from the project so hopefully I'll be able to spend more time on development.
